The project will be developed through an initial stage of preparatory actions which include studies relating to waste management in Europe and worldwide and the realization of the first prototype of the appliance that will be tested.
From the sixth month will begin testing in the 3 partners municipalities representing three different types of urban development in order to test the appliance and the new plan for waste management in different contexts to develop a system of governance replicable and adaptable to any urban or rural center in the world.
Preparatory activities
1. Laboratory experimentation, monitoring, evaluation, problem solving strategies and contingency plans.
Development and implementation of the prototype system on the basis of the results, information and data coming from studies and researches following the established evaluation criteria.
IRSSAT will organise a promotion campaign and a sponsorship open conference in Catania. During this event the pilot-prototype will be presented thanks to practical demonstration activities and through the showing of a technical and promotional short film produced in order to illustrate its functionality and benefits.
Main target audience will be local and regional administrators, political leaders, stakeholders, opinion leaders, key actors but also simple citizens, young people, schools and universities, etc.
BENEFICIARY RESPONSIBLE: I.R.S.S.A.T.
2. Normative and social evaluation of the existing situation related to waste collection; identification and analysis of successful stories related to the management of domestic organic waste at source.
BENEFICIARY RESPONSIBLE: Regione Siciliana – D.R.A.
Model Planning and Prototype Implementation.
1. We will test the N.O.WA.S.T.E. system through the installation of about 1.000 prototypes in the 3 Municipalities involved:
- Municipality of Gaggi – rural community member of the Alcantara Fluvial National Park.;
- Municipality of Castelmola – mountain tourist centre neighbouring Taormina. It’s one of the most beautiful villages (on the whole 179 villages awarded) in Italy, a natural balcony above Taormina;
- Municipality of Melilli – metropolitan industrial community part of a petrochemical industrial pole near Syracuse (Melilli – Augusta - Priolo Gargallo).
BENEFICIARY RESPONSIBLE: I.R.S.S.A.T.
2. Market analyses and cost-benefit studies:
- Studies about economic saves and environmental gains related to the new waste management;
- Market analysis of prototype production costs in order to foreseeing a large-scale diffusion as domestic appliances at a national and EU level
BENEFICIARY RESPONSIBLE: Università degli Studi di Catania - D.E.M.Q..
Experimentation in the 3 Municipalities involved
- Fase 1
- Fase 2
- Fase 3
First step
The first stage of the experimentation activities aims at directly involving local administrators and opinion leaders in the testing actions. The sample families will be previously trained with n.1 specific training workshop and will receive constant care. The prototypes for each municipality will be installed and evaluated for 6 months. At the conclusion of this first phase, local administrators will be in charge of involving citizens and encourage the use and testing of the system. The prototypes will be installed for a defined period of 6 months per each municipality. After the conclusion of the first stage, local representatives will directly promote the use of the prototype system among citizens.
Second step
The second stage Includes the installation of other prototypes in selected sample households that will test the prototype for 12 months. During this stage, the local municipality will study the methods and systems for the treatment of the precompost previously achieved most suitable future implementation on a large scale. The sample families will be previously formed in the daily use of the appliance, through workshop organized in each municipality. During the experimentation phase the working team and experts will give a constant support and assistance to the sample families. It will make pools and interviews in order to evaluate the approach of citizens and their rating.
Third step
This last phase will last for 12 months and will see a massive experimentation that will cover the whole village of Castelmola (about 400 families) and 50% of family units living in the municipality of Gaggi. Other n. 200 prototypes will be installed in a specific area or district of Melilli. It will also be tested the use of special prototypes for restaurants, hotels, cafeterias and schools.
